Why do more spiders enter homes in autumn?
Compartir
The same thing happens every year: September or October arrives, and spiders start appearing in the hallway, bathroom, or living room. It's not your imagination.
They're looking for a mate
The main reason is that many house spiders reach maturity at the end of summer. The males leave their hiding places and wander around looking for females, so they are seen much more than the rest of the year.
Quiet, sheltered corners
With the change in weather, homes offer what they are looking for: quiet corners, low light, and other insects to eat. That's why they appear in storage rooms, garages, corners, and behind furniture.
Are they dangerous?
The spiders we usually see in the house are harmless to people. They scare us more than they actually do. Even so, no one likes to find one on their pillow.
What to do
- Seal cracks and install fly screens.
- Clean and tidy up the corners where they hide.
- When you see one, take it outside without killing it. We explain how in how to get a spider out of the house without killing it.
With a Bug Catcher in hand, the spider season is much easier to get through.
