How to get a spider out of the house without killing it (step by step)
Compartir
You see a spider on the wall and your first instinct is to grab a shoe. But squashing it leaves stains, sometimes it doesn't work, and honestly, there's no need. House spiders are harmless to people and they also eat other insects. The best thing to do is to get them outside.
1. Stay calm and don't lose sight of it
Spiders move in bursts: they run a little and then stay still. Take advantage when it's still to act.
2. Cover it without touching it
The classic method is the glass and paper: you put a glass on top and slide a piece of cardboard underneath. It works, but you have to get your hand very close and on walls or in corners it usually escapes.
With a bug catcher like Caza Bichos it's easier: you rest the transparent dome on top holding it by the handle and slide the lid with your thumb. It stays trapped and your hand is far away at all times.
3. Take it outside
Release it in the garden, a park, or on the balcony, preferably a few meters from the door so it doesn't come back in right away.
4. Prevent more from coming in
- Check and seal gaps in windows and doors.
- Install mosquito screens.
- Tidy up storage rooms and garages: they love quiet corners.
- Remove cobwebs regularly.
And the next time one appears, you know: no shoes.
